Miami-Dade Anchorage Ordinance: Approve the October 20 Deferral and Prepare for January

Miami-Dade Anchorage Ordinance: Approve the October 20 Deferral and Prepare for January

Miami-Dade’s boating community has an opportunity to push back against the proposed overnight anchoring ordinance—but the work is not finished.

On October 14, 2026, Commissioner Vicki L. Lopez requested that the ordinance be deferred until the first Board of County Commissioners meeting in January 2027. The proposal remains listed as Item 7A, File No. 261278, on the October 20 agenda. The immediate priority is to secure the board’s approval of that requested deferral. A request to postpone the ordinance should not be mistaken for a completed vote or a withdrawal. This is not seen in the video but it was filed in the paperwork.

For boaters, waterfront residents, and supporters of public access to Biscayne Bay, the message should be clear: approve the deferral on October 20, then use the additional time to organize meaningful opposition if the proposal returns in January.

Here is the File On Attempted Anchorage Ban:

Why This Matters

The proposed ordinance would establish overnight anchoring regulations in incorporated and unincorporated Miami-Dade County, with exemptions, civil penalties, and other enforcement remedies.

The debate reaches beyond where a boat can spend the night. It raises questions about access to public waters, the treatment of responsible boaters, and whether people who depend on anchoring have realistic alternatives.

During the committee hearing, a boater described marinas as full or unaffordable and warned that the proposed anchoring limits would leave her without a workable way to remain lawfully at anchor. Those concerns deserve serious consideration before commissioners move forward.

Protecting navigation, water quality, and public safety should be priorities. The county should address specific harmful conduct while preserving reasonable access for responsible boaters.

October 20 Still Matters

Here is the agenda: https://www.miamidade.gov/govaction/commagenda.asp?cmbmeetdate=5568&file=true&changes=false&auditor=false

Anyone opposing the ordinance should continue contacting commissioners and supporting approval of the deferral. Written comments should identify Item 7A, File No. 261278, and clearly ask the board to postpone consideration until January.

The requested delay provides an opportunity for a better discussion. It should give affected boaters time to document their circumstances, explain the practical consequences, and propose alternatives.

Use the Time to Prepare

Sign The Petition (Almost 1,000 Signatures As Of Oct 19 2026)

If the deferral is approved, supporters of anchoring access should begin preparing immediately:

  • Gather accounts from boaters who would be affected.

  • Document dockage availability, costs, and vessel restrictions.

  • Request protections for established, responsible boaters.

  • Develop alternatives focused on unsafe vessels, pollution, and navigation hazards.

  • Monitor the January agenda and any revisions to the ordinance.

A deferral buys time. Protecting anchoring access requires using that time well.

Approve the deferral on October 20. Stay organized afterward. If the ordinance returns in January, be ready to oppose it with facts, practical alternatives, and a strong public presence.

Addendum. No discussion was made of this item although it was listed in the agenda.
